    Our Customer

The University of South Australia (UniSA) spans 6 campuses across the state and educates over 30,000 national and international students. The University decided to update two separate areas on its City West and Mawson Lakes campuses so that each one could be better utilised as well as modernised.

    Project Description

The City West campus is home to the University’s Visual Arts, Design and Architecture Schools. UniSA identified a prestigious but underutilised heritage-listed building on this campus for refurbishment, turning its internal space into a modern student lounge able to also double up as a relaxing retreat. Meanwhile, the Mawson Lakes campus needed to transform two of its Technology Department’s Electrical Engineering laboratories into new state-of-the-art mechatronics laboratories.

To seamlessly complete the works and minimise disruption to students and the University, UniSA sought the assistance of a provider able to meet their every need for both campuses’ refurbishment works. Programmed’s relationship with UniSA spans over 20 years, and engaging the Programmed Building Projects team was just another way the University was able to leverage our expertise in comprehensive property services.

    Project Solution

The heritage façade of the City West campus’ two-storey building was maintained but internal finishes were updated for a more robust, modern and functional space that acted as both a daytime student retreat and weekend event function area. This interior refurbishment was delivered within the stipulated tight time schedule which necessitated work over the New Year break. Due to the aged, and dilapidated nature of the building in some parts, many refurbishment details had to be developed or refined during the process to maintain the integrity of the desired outcome. The refurbished space is now a multi-functional site encompassing outdoor meeting areas, informal study breakout rooms, an indoor lounge including cocktail areas with a bar, and toilets.

The Mawson Lakes laboratory upgrading involved work of a technical nature. So, Programmed made certain we worked closely with UniSA and the architect, underpinning this with close communication. Refurbishment works included structural demolition and construction, installation of audio visual equipment, retractable data, electrical and exhaust installations as well as new ceilings and floor coverings. Works also included a track for robotics testing requiring great construction accuracy.

    Project Outcome

Programmed’s invaluable experience with heritage listed buildings and technical construction, coupled with our flexibility to complete works during semester breaks enabled UniSA to achieve seamless implementation for the multiple-faceted works they needed. An important outcome was Programmed’s safety practices which met the University’s stringent requirements for HSEQ. The refurbished areas have been widely utilised and take pride of place on each Campus respectively.
